James Gaskins joined the Edgewater staff in September of 2018. He retired from the Berkeley County School System after 34 years of service. He was a teacher, coach, athletic trainer and for the last 11 years as an assistant principal. He was at Goose Creek High School (1985-1999, 2015-2018), Westview Middle School (1999-2009), and Cane Bay High School (2009-2015). He has been involved in working with athletes and students for over 43 years. Tom Moore and James Gaskins were first together in 1979 at Gardner-Webb College, where James was the head athletic trainer and director of football operations. When Moore moved to The Citadel, Gaskins remained with him as an assistant trainer.
In 1985 James left to become the 1st athletic trainer in Berkeley County and 8th in the state. He is credited for establishing sports medicine in all BCSD. He is responsible for school and community relationships.
James was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the South Carolina Coaches Association for his work in coaching soccer at Goose Creek High. He was one of the founders of the South Carolina Soccer Coaches North-South Soccer Classic. He is the only person to be selected coach and athletic trainer. He is also the only trainer to serve as the trainer for the 4 SCHSCA North-South Football Classic.
James and his wife Debra have 2 daughters, Kelley (USC ’13 and Hannah Cot C ’14), and 1 granddaughter, Sadie.
